Just got around to reading John H. Richardson’s nearly two-year old Esquire article on Paul Thomas Anderson (The Secret History of Paul Thomas Anderson). In it he tells how PTA quit film school at New York University because of two myopic (my word) professors. The one dissed Terminator 2. The second, graded him a C for a prose sample cribbed from David Mamet. Certainly, going to college with the intention of being a film director is not the same as going to college with the intention of becoming a brain surgeon. I think PTA made the right call. Upshot, if you don’t need a back-up plan, FUCK-EM. Keep your money and get to work on your future already. Unfortunately for the 99% of us out there, we’re not only stuck with the myopic professors, but also the myopic bosses, business partners, clients, co-workers. But that’s not why you called!

PTA’a sixth feature The Master with Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, Magnolia) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, 28 Weeks Later) is set to begin shooting this month, which means we might have a PTA movie by early 2012!

NYC Stained Glass, TC Boyle & Absolut Brooklyn

My recent trip to NYC was highlighted by three top things — seeing Judith Schaechter’s stained glass show, scoring a 1st edition T.C. Boyle and trying Absolut Brooklyn. In no particular order:

Judith Schaechter is a stained glass artist from Philadelphia, (see Nature above). She is also a close friend of our friend Ted. Ted was going to see Judith’s May 22 opening at Claire Oliver Gallery in Manhattan and we decided to tag along.

Before the show, Jim and I tooled around the Village. Had some lunch. Stopped in some books stores. Some thrift stores. In Village Thrift I found a first edition Inner Circle by T.C. Boyle for $2. I don’t know whether the book was used as a resource for the film Kinsey. I guess not, because I think it takes some novelistic liberties with history. After I got the book home, I saw that the book is signed by the author! Curious though, why doesn’t Boyle sign on the title page?

The day before the show, Jim and I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and spent the day in Brooklyn. For lunch we stopped in Bar Sepia. And oh, of libation! Always a dilemma for me since I can’t drink beer and can’t seem to find a wine I like. The bartender offered up, very whimsically I might add, Absolut Brooklyn. I almost passed until I read on the bottle, “A Spike Lee Collaboration”. Hey, I love Spike Lee! And afterall, Spike is from Brooklyn! The vodka is flavored with red apple (NYC being the big apple and all) and ginger. I have to say, it wasn’t bad. (That’s my photograph of the Absolut bottle! I immediately bought two bottles of the stuff as soon as I got home.)

Friends and I hung out at last night’s First Friday in Old City. One of our stops was the 3rd Street Gallery on 2nd Street to see Marjorie Grigonis’ Abstractions/Distractions. We enjoyed the show.

Before leaving, I signed the book and grabbed a postcard of the show featuring the Infrastructure painting (see above). I turned the postcard over and noticed that the gallery was very wisely recycling postcards that were returned from the post office for insufficient addresses, no forwarding, etc. The name on the postcard I picked-up was Louise Gillette. I had to read it twice! I couldn’t believe that on some anonymous Friday night outing, among a sprawled array of postcards, I had arbitrarily selected a returned postcard destined for Louise Gillette.

When my husband and I bought our house 11 years ago, a wonderful woman was renting the house just before we moved in, and her name was Louise Gillette. Louise is a flying trapeze artist, choreographer and teacher. I believe she currently teaches at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts!

Tarantino got ripped! Love THE HURT LOCKER and Marc Boal, but Tarantino’s script was full of unique characters and never before imagined scenes … plus, the bravery of rewriting history! Damn! Take that WWII!

Psyched to see Guy Pearce at the show with the other THE HURT LOCKER guys Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty.

Tim Robbins’ comedic introductory tribute to Morgan Freeman … genius.

I know the four top actor awards were no surprise, but I’m still happy for my guy Jeff! I loved him talking about how much his mom and dad loved show biz.

THE HURT LOCKER takes top wins for best director and picture! I saw this film twice at the Philadelphia International Film Festival in April 2009 and twice in theatrical release, which gives you an idea of how much I liked it. Thrilled to see a great, small picture crawl its way to top wins at the Oscars. Amazing.

Guns ‘n Roses‘ 1988 release Lies was a solid piece of work. Patience made the album an immediate classic. Gun ‘n Roses’ 1990 followup Appetite for Destruction secured the band a place in rock ‘n roll history with Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child ‘o Mine. Then, in consistent defiance of expectation, G ‘n R dropped their 1991 twin vinyl release Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. No self-respecting rock ‘n roll fan doesn’t have at least five G ‘n R favorites playing heavy rotation on their iPod.

What of Guns ‘n Roses’ recent release, 17 years in the waiting, Chinese Democracy? I’ve fallen in love with so much music over these last 17 years, and what I have to say of Chinese Democracy is, it really hasn’t kept pace.

As everyone knows, the only original G ‘n R member is Axl. A drama of which cost Axl personal fortunes because he had to buy out the contracts of the original members, then settle lawsuits brought against the band name. This drama takes a toll — and most unfortunately, that toll weighted creatively upon Chinese Democracy. Overly produced. Heavy handed. Too orchestral. Vocally redundant.

Memorable cuts include Chinese Democracy, There Was a Time, If the World (very James Bond), Madagascar and Prostitute.

Would I buy this album? Nah.

Thanksgiving Years Past

In previous years, my mother hosted our family Thanksgiving. My cousin’s daughter Stephanie presented my mother with this Thanksgiving celebration drawing she drew as an art assignment. I think Stephanie was in 2nd or 3rd grade. Stephanie is now 16 and in high school. You can only imagine how embarrassed she’ll be if she happens upon this post! The size of this drawing is approximately 16″ x 19″ and it has hung on the side of my refrigerator for almost 10 years!
